Cremation in Sweden is quite popular and more and more people are choosing it. The burial law provides that crematoria can only be established and operated by entities responsible for funerals.
The Swedish parliament has determined that cremation and burial of deceased persons is the responsibility of parishes and parish associations of the Church of Sweden and the municipalities of Stockholm and Tranås. The longest permissible period from death to the cremation process is one month. A possible permit to extend this period can be issued by the Tax Office.
To have a deceased person's body cremated, a complete set of documents must be submitted:
Body cremation takes place directly after the funeral ceremony ends.
After cremation, any metal elements larger than 3 mm are removed from the ashes and sent for disposal. This may include implants in the deceased's body or metal elements from the coffin. Since it cannot be guaranteed that jewelry left on the deceased's body will be placed with the ashes in the urn, it is recommended that relatives remove jewelry from the deceased's body before placing it in the coffin.
According to Swedish law, ashes must be buried or scattered within one year of cremation.
The cremation process takes an average of 1.5 - 2 hours. The time depends on the weight of the deceased and the material the coffin is made of (wooden, ecological).
