In 2001, Italy passed a law facilitating cremation, allowing for the scattering of ashes or placing them in an urn for storage at home. As a result of these changes, the number of crematoriums in Italy has increased to almost 80.

The above-mentioned law also states that the ashes of the deceased are delivered to the family, and not stored in the cemetery as before. Scattering of ashes can take place in open places (forest, sea, lake, river, field) in private places or in special places in the cemetery.

The cremation process takes an average of 1.5 - 2 hours. The time depends on the weight of the deceased and the material the coffin is made of (wooden, ecological).

Ashes can only be scattered in places indicated in a special list maintained by local authorities.

Ashes can be stored at home after meeting appropriate conditions.
