Cremation in Greece

Cremation in Greece

Greece, associated by many as the cradle of civilization, approaches the topic of cremation quite skeptically. It has been allowed in this country only since 2006, despite strong opposition from the Orthodox Church.

The law passed in parliament states that the choice of funeral rites is the right of every person and they have the possibility to choose both traditional burial of the body in a grave and cremation. The law also states that if the deceased's wish is not contrary to public order, health regulations or moral traditions of the persons who undertook the burial of the deceased, they must fulfill the deceased's wish.
