In France, ashes are most often given to the family, who can place them in a traditional ground grave, place them in a columbarium, or scatter them in a place appropriately arranged for this purpose, such as in a cemetery. If the deceased expresses such a wish, ashes can also be scattered in nature, except on public roads. However, the person authorized to handle the funeral must submit a declaration to the mayor of the municipality where the deceased was born.
