Austria has 16 crematoria, distributed across eight of the nine Austrian federal states. Burgenland does not have a crematorium. The largest crematorium in Austria is the Vienna Feuerhalle Simmering crematorium, which was the first crematorium in Austria to open in 1922.

Scattering of ashes in Austria is prohibited. Ashes may only be received, stored, or transported by authorized persons, such as funeral homes. Storing an urn with ashes at home is only possible in some federal states, after obtaining appropriate permission.

The cremation coffin is equipped with a refractory brick to ensure clear identification of the ashes after cremation.

Since 2015, Austria also operates the private crematorium Cremation Austria, located in St. Marienkirchen an der Polsenz. A special feature of this crematorium is that since 2016, the company operates in a CO2 neutral manner.

The cremation process takes an average of 1.5 - 2 hours. The time depends on the weight of the deceased and the material the coffin is made of (wooden, ecological).
